Paddleboard Lessons in Cabo San Lucas — Beginner’s Guide

Palmilla Beach is one of the best places in Los Cabos to try stand-up paddleboarding. The water is calm in the early mornings, the sand is wide and flat, and the conditions are forgiving enough for complete beginners. Here is everything you need to know before you go.

Quick Tips

  • Book a morning lesson – the water is mirror-flat before 9 AM and the sun is not yet at its strongest
  • Most hotels and beach vendors offer paddleboard rentals; your villa concierge can arrange a private certified instructor instead
  • Wear your swimsuit and bring reef-safe sunscreen – you will be in the sun for the full session
  • Bring a light long-sleeve shirt for the first 20 minutes until your arms warm up
  • Santa Maria Bay and Chileno Bay are equally good for paddling and significantly less crowded than Medano Beach

Why Palmilla Beach is the Best Place to Learn

The south-facing stretch of Palmilla Beach catches very little swell, even when the Pacific side of Los Cabos is rolling. Early morning paddlers regularly report conditions described as ‘like glass.’ That is not an exaggeration on the right morning.

The sand shelf drops very gradually, which means you can stand comfortably in chest-deep water while you find your balance before moving into deeper water. For beginners, this matters more than almost any other factor.

Palmilla Beach is also one of the few beaches in Los Cabos where swimming is safe and pleasant year-round. The south-facing orientation shelters it from the swell that affects the Pacific-facing beaches.

A three-minute walk from Villa Paraiso puts you directly on the best stretch of Palmilla Beach – no drive required, no parking.

What to Expect in Your First Lesson

Most instructors in Los Cabos start on the beach with a 10-minute land tutorial covering how to hold the paddle, where to stand on the board, and the correct stance.

After the land tutorial, you go into chest-deep water to familiarise yourself with the paddling motion and turning strokes before heading out into the open water.

A first session covers standing up safely, forward paddling, a basic sweep stroke for turning, and a brief straight-line segment. Most people are up on their feet within 15 minutes.

Private lessons at Palmilla or Chileno Bay can be arranged through your villa concierge, who books a certified instructor to come directly to the beach in front of Villa Paraiso.

Semi-private lessons for two people are also available and are a good option for couples or friends learning together.

Best Beaches for Paddleboarding in Los Cabos

Palmilla Beach is the top choice near Villa Paraiso. The combination of shelter, gradual sand shelf, and proximity to the villa makes it the practical first choice.

Santa Maria Bay is a protected cove with equally calm conditions, better suited to paddlers who want to explore the coastline from shore.

Chileno Bay offers a wider sandy entry point, making it more accessible for beginners who are not comfortable with the rocky entry at some of the other coves.

Medano Beach is the most popular swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas but is not ideal for paddleboarding. Boat wake from the water sports zone creates chop that makes standing difficult in the afternoon.

When to Go Paddleboarding in Los Cabos

Summer months bring the calmest morning water but also the highest air temperatures – often 90-95 degF before 8 AM in July and August. UV-protective clothing is strongly recommended.

October through May offers cooler morning air in the 70-82 degF range with equally flat water. A morning session before 9 AM is the reliable choice year-round.

December through March also brings the possibility of seeing migrating whales from your board. Humpback whales are regularly sighted off Palmilla Beach during these months.

October is particularly underrated: the water is still warm from summer, tourist numbers have dropped, and villa rates are significantly lower.
