Best Sunset Spots in Cabo San Lucas

Los Cabos has a reputation for dramatic sunsets that stop people mid-conversation. At the tip of the Baja Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean crashes into the Sea of Cortez, the light does things that photographers travel across the world to capture — and visitors who’ve been coming for thirty years still pull out their phones when the sky starts to turn. This guide covers the best places to watch a Cabo sunset, what to expect at each spot, and how to plan your evening so the moment lands.

Why Cabo Sunsets Are Different

Most coastal destinations get one ocean view. Cabo gets two — the Pacific on the west side and the Sea of Cortez on the east. The result is that the quality of light shifts depending on where you’re standing. On the Pacific side, sunsets are widescreen and dramatic — big clouds build over the water and the whole sky ignites. On the Sea of Cortez side, the sun drops behind the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and the colours come from reflected light off the sea and the sand, which gives a softer, more intimate quality.

Both are extraordinary. The question is which kind of evening you’re after.

Pacific Side Sunset Spots

El Arco and Land’s End — The Iconic View

The famous rock arch at Land’s End is the most photographed spot in Los Cabos for good reason. The sun drops behind it from the Pacific side, and as it hits the water the whole formation is silhouetted against an orange and pink sky that looks edited. You can’t get here on foot — you take a water taxi or glass-bottom boat from the Cabo Marina. Most boat tours time themselves to arrive about 45 minutes before sunset and leave after dark, which gives you the full show.

El Arco is also where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, and on certain evenings the light catches both bodies of water simultaneously, creating a split-light effect that’s genuinely unique. The sea lions on the rocks beside the arch add to the scene — there’s usually a crowd of them hauled out on the rocks, completely indifferent to the spectacle above them.

Note: boats cluster here at sunset and the area can get busy. Private charters have more flexibility and can anchor in better positions.

Medano Beach — Lively Sunset Energy

Medano Beach is the one spot in Los Cabos where the sunset comes with a soundtrack. The beach bars — The Office, Mango Deck, The Sand Bar — all face west and set up for the evening trade. Music plays, the crowd builds, and the vibe is high energy. It’s a party sunset rather than a contemplative one, and that’s exactly why people love it.

For families or anyone who wants a meal with their sunset, restaurants like The Office on the Beach have tables on the sand. Come early to secure a spot in high season.

The Famous El Arco View from the Water — On a Private Charter

The premium sunset experience. A private sailing catamaran or motor yacht departs the marina late afternoon, anchors off Land’s End, and watches the sun drop from the water. On a calm evening the sea is flat and the sky fills your peripheral vision. Humpback whales are sometimes still breaching in the late afternoon light (December through April), dolphins often accompany the boats, and rays skim the surface nearby. This is the kind of experience people describe as the highlight of their trip.

Sea of Cortez Side Sunset Spots

San José del Cabo Malecon — The Local Favourite

The Malecon in San José del Cabo is a long oceanfront promenade that faces west across the Sea of Cortez. It’s where local families come in the early evening — not necessarily to watch the sun drop into the sea (it goes down behind the mountains here), but to be in the light as it changes. Joggers use the promenade, kids play on the small grass areas, and the whole town seems to be out walking by 6 PM.

There’s a row of cafes and restaurants along the Malecon where you can grab a table and watch the light soften over the water. It’s quieter than Medano Beach and more authentically local. The Sunday evening San José del Cabo art walk runs through the Malecon area and makes for a particularly lively sunset evening.

Puerto Los Cabos Marina — Calm Water Sunset

The Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo faces east across the water toward the mountains. The sunset here is less dramatic than the Pacific side, but the still water of the marina catches the reflected colours and the atmosphere is relaxed. It’s an excellent option for families with young children — there are restaurants within walking distance, the area is safe, and you can make an evening of it without a long drive.

The Hill at Villa Paraiso — Sunset from Home

Villa Paraiso sits on a small rise above Palmilla Beach with unobstructed western exposure across the Pacific. From the terrace, infinity pool, or roof deck, the sunset is visible in full widescreen without leaving the villa. On clear evenings the show lasts from about 6:45 PM in summer to around 5:45 PM in winter, and the colours shift from gold to orange to deep magenta over the course of 20 to 30 minutes.

This is the option that guests consistently say exceeded their expectations — particularly those who had planned to go out to watch the sunset elsewhere, found they didn’t want to leave the property, and were very happy about that decision.

When to Watch — Timing Matters in Cabo

Sunsets in Los Cabos are timed differently depending on the season. From November through March the sun typically sets between 5:30 PM and 6:15 PM. From April through October it pushes later — sometimes as late as 7:30 PM in July. If you’re planning an activity followed by sunset, build in buffer time. Traffic between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas can be heavier than expected in the late afternoon, and construction on the corridor highway is a near-constant fact of life.

The absolute best light — what photographers call the golden hour — lasts about 20 minutes before the sun fully disappears. Arrive at your chosen spot 30 minutes before the scheduled sunset for the full experience.

Combining Sunset with a Dinner

This is one of the most natural combinations in Los Cabos. Several excellent restaurants are within a short drive or boat ride of the best sunset spots:

The Office on the Beach at Medano Beach is right on the sand and open for dinner through the evening — secure your table before sunset and you can watch the whole thing without moving.

Marlin Blanca in San José del Cabo is a short drive from the Malecon sunset promenade. The food is exceptional — elevated Mexican in a lovely open-air courtyard.

Taberna del Gato in the San José del Cabo arts district is smaller, more intimate, and excellent for a pre-sunset drink and small plates before a walk along the Malecon.

What to Bring to a Sunset Spot

A light layer — even in summer the temperature drops quickly once the sun is gone, particularly if there’s any breeze off the water.

Cash for boat tours and beach bar tabs — several of the smaller operations don’t take cards.

Sunscreen — yes, even for the sunset. The sun is still strong right until it disappears.

A camera or good phone camera — Cabo sunsets are genuinely worth documenting. Most people photograph more on their first evening here than in the rest of their trip combined.
