- Book a morning lesson — the water is mirror-flat before 9 AM and the sun isn’t too strong yet
- Most hotels and beach vendors offer rentals; your villa concierge can arrange a private instructor
- Wear your swimsuit and bring reef-safe sunscreen — you’ll be in the sun for the full session
- Bring a light long-sleeve shirt for the first 20 minutes until your arms warm up
- Santa Maria Bay and Chileno Bay are equally good for paddling — less crowded than Médano Beach
Why Palmilla Beach is the Best Place to Learn
The south-facing stretch of Palmilla Beach — a three-minute walk from Villa Paraiso — catches very little swell, even when the Pacific side of Los Cabos is rolling. Early morning paddlers regularly report conditions described as “like glass.” That matters when you’re standing on a board for the first time.
The sand shelf drops gradually, meaning you can stand comfortably in chest-deep water while finding your balance — ideal for beginners who need a safe, shallow start before moving into deeper water.
What to Expect in Your First Lesson
Most instructors in Los Cabos start on the beach with a 10-minute land tutorial: how to hold the paddle, where to stand on the board, and the correct stance. You’ll then go into chest-deep water to practise paddling and turning before heading out.
A first session typically covers: standing up safely, forward paddling, a basic sweep stroke for turning, and a brief period of paddling in a straight line. Most people are up on their feet within 15 minutes.
Private lessons at Palmilla or Chileno Bay are available through local instructors and through your villa concierge, who can arrange a certified instructor to come directly to the beach in front of the villa.
Best Beaches for Paddling in Los Cabos
Palmilla Beach is the top choice for paddling near Villa Paraiso. Santa Maria Bay — a protected cove in the marine sanctuary — has equally calm conditions and is ideal for intermediate paddlers who want to explore the coastline. Chileno Bay is another excellent option with calm water and a wider sandy entry point suitable for beginners. Médano Beach is the most popular beach in Cabo San Lucas but does get choppy in the afternoon due to boat wake.
When to Go
Summer months (July–September) bring the calmest morning water but also the highest temperatures — often 90–95°F before 8 AM. October through May offers cooler morning air temperatures (70–82°F) with equally flat conditions. December through March brings slightly more wind in the afternoon, so a morning session before 9 AM is the reliable choice year-round.
What to Bring
Reef-safe sunscreen (standard oxybenzene formulas are banned in the marine sanctuary at Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay), a light long-sleeve shirt for sun protection, and water shoes if you have sensitive feet — the occasional rock patch on the sea floor is normal. Your villa concierge can arrange boards and an instructor, so you don’t need to bring anything except yourself.
