Every winter, humpback and grey whales migrate thousands of miles from their Alaskan and Russian feeding grounds to the warm, shallow waters of the Baja California Peninsula to breed and give birth. Los Cabos sits directly in their path — making Cabo San Lucas one of the most reliable whale watching destinations in North America. December through April, the odds of a close encounter are exceptionally high.
Whale Watching Season in Cabo
- December–January: Peak grey whale migration, most frequent sightings
- February–March: Humpback whales active, mothers and calves near shore
- April: Late-season sightings, blue whales begin appearing
- Best overall month: February — highest diversity of species and most consistent sightings
What You’ll See
The primary species encountered off Los Cabos are humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and grey whales (Eschrichtius robustus). Bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, and occasionally blue whales are also spotted. Lucky watchers sometimes see pods of dolphins escorting a whale mother and calf.
Humpbacks are known for their acrobatic behaviour — breaching (full body jumps out of the water), pectoral fin slapping, and tail lobbing are all common. Grey whales are more reserved but occasionally approach small boats.
Best Tours from Cabo San Lucas
- Shared sailing catamaran: $80-$120 per person, 2-2.5 hours, most atmospheric option
- Private yacht charter: $1,200-$2,000 for up to 8 passengers, full day possible
- Expedition-style whale watching boat: $150-$200 per person, marine biologist onboard, smaller groups
- From the shore: Land-based watching at Cerromar Beach and Chileno Bay during peak migration
Tips for a Great Experience
- Go early morning — seas are calmer, whales are more active
- Bring seasickness tablets — the Pacific side can be choppy even in calm weather
- Wear sunscreen and a hat — you’re on open water with no shade
- Bring binoculars — whales often surface at a distance
- Book a small boat — smaller groups mean less noise and better sightings
