Best Golf Courses in Los Cabos
Los Cabos has quietly become one of the most compelling golf destinations in the world — a statement backed up by every major golf publication that has covered the region in the last decade. The combination of dramatic ocean-and-desert terrain, the work of some of the game’s greatest architects, and year-round playability has made the Los Cabos golf corridor one of the premium destinations in the sport. Here’s the honest guide to the courses worth playing.
Why Los Cabos Is Different
Most coastal golf destinations offer ocean views as their primary appeal. Los Cabos adds a second dimension that elevates it above almost everywhere else: the desert. The contrast between the golden-brown hills of the Sierra de la Laguna and the blue Pacific — or the still teal of the Sea of Cortez — from an elevated green is something that even experienced golfers describe differently from what they expected. The desert creates a visual clarity that is unique to this part of the world, and the architects who built the courses here used both landscapes.
The second thing that separates Los Cabos: the climate. It’s dry almost year-round, the courses are kept in exceptional condition, and you can play in short sleeves every day of the year. This isn’t a destination where courses close for winter.
Jack Nicklaus Palmilla Golf Club
The course that put Los Cabos on the golf map. Jack Nicklaus designed the Palmilla layout in the 1990s and it remains the signature course of the region — a par-70, 7,000-yard test that winds through the desert and along the coast with an elevation change that makes every round feel different from the last. The 17th hole is one of the most photographed par-threes in golf, sitting high above the sea with a view that genuinely competes with anything in the world.
Palmilla is private — it was the first private golf resort in Latin America when it opened, and that exclusivity has been maintained. Villa Paraiso guests can arrange access through the concierge, but advance booking is required.
Querencia Golf Club
Querencia is a members-owned golf club south of San José del Cabo and one of the most respected layouts in Mexico. The course was designed by Tom Fazio and it shows his philosophy — a course that asks you to think rather than simply power through. The desert framing is more subtle here than at some other courses, and the layout rewards accuracy off the tee rather than length. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely private, which makes it a preferred choice for serious golfers who find the more resort-oriented courses a little loud.
The conditioning is exceptional and the staff-to-guest ratio reflects the membership nature of the club. Golf here is available to resort guests by arrangement.
Diamante Cabo San Lucas
Diamante has two courses — the Dunes Course designed by Davis Love III, and the newer Ocean Course, which was designed by Tiger Woods and opened in 2014 as his first design in Mexico. Both are in the Diamante community south of the marina, and both are regulars on international course-of-the-year lists.
The Dunes Course is the older and more established of the two. It follows a links style through dunes and desert, with the Pacific visible from several holes. Davis Love III used the natural dune movement as the primary design driver, which gives it a more natural feeling than most purpose-built resort courses. It’s a course that rewards shot-shaping and punishes sloppy driving.
The Tiger Woods Ocean Course is shorter than the Dunes but no less challenging. The signature feature is the holes that run alongside the Pacific — ocean on one side, dunes on the other, with wind a constant companion. This is not a course for beginners. The wind off the Pacific can turn a short hole into a genuine test.
Campante Golf Course at Hilton Los Cabos
The most accessible of Los Cabos’ premium courses — Campante is attached to the Hilton Los Cabos resort in the tourist corridor, making it the practical option for visitors who don’t have a private club arrangement. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is kept in strong resort condition year-round.
It’s not in the same class as Palmilla or Diamante, but for visitors who want a quality round without the logistics of a private club, Campante delivers. The Sea of Cortez is visible from most holes, the pace of play is reliable, and the staff are experienced with visiting golfers.
Cabo San Lucas Country Club
The most established course in the immediate Cabo San Lucas area — a long-running layout in the hills above the town that has been part of the Los Cabos golf scene for decades. It’s a parkland-style course rather than a desert course, which gives it a different character from the other courses in the region, and the tropical vegetation around the fairways offers a softer visual than the desert layouts.
It’s generally less crowded than the resort courses and makes a good option for golfers who want an early morning round before the afternoon wind picks up. Green fees are more accessible than the private club courses.
Planning Your Golf Trip to Los Cabos
The best time to play is from November through May. Summer heat (June through October) is manageable for early morning tee times, but the shoulder seasons of May and October are genuinely ideal — warm enough to be comfortable, not so hot that pace of play suffers, and with fewer visitors overall.
Most private courses should be booked at least a week in advance, and two to three weeks ahead for peak season. The concierge at Villa Paraiso can arrange bookings at Palmilla, Querencia, and Diamante — all of which require some form of introduction or resort affiliation that our team can facilitate.
Pack your clubs or rent quality sets locally — Los Cabos has several golf rental operations that deliver premium equipment to villas and resorts. Ask the concierge to arrange this at the same time as your tee time.
